Start With The Hosting Reality

If the application already depends on AWS, CloudFront may be the simplest answer. If the project needs aggressive edge control, Cloudflare or Akamai can be the better fit.

Akamai still leans hard into distributed edge infrastructure, security, and cloud delivery. CloudFront remains the cleanest AWS-native route when the rest of the stack already lives in Amazon.

That means the best answer is usually the one that fits the operating model the team is already using.

If the team also needs edge compute, bot protection, or a zero trust access layer, Cloudflare often becomes more than a CDN. If the site needs global delivery plus security at scale, Akamai can be a serious fit. If the project mainly needs asset delivery and AWS integration, CloudFront keeps the architecture simple.

Think About The Next Layer Too

The edge is rarely only about speed. It may also be the place where traffic filtering, security policy, bot mitigation, API protection, and even AI-agent access get enforced.

That is why the CDN should not be chosen in isolation. The right platform is the one that supports the rest of the stack without forcing awkward workarounds.

Do not choose the CDN first. Choose the operating model first, then choose the edge layer that fits it.
