Cloudflare Precursor: One-Click Behavioral Defense When 57% of Web Traffic Is Bots

How Precursor Works

Why This Matters Now

The traditional arms race between CAPTCHA designers and bot authors has reached a dead end. AI-powered bots can now solve CAPTCHAs faster and more accurately than humans. Dane Knecht, Cloudflare’s CTO, puts it plainly: “Traditional security checks look at a single moment in time, but modern bots have gotten smart enough to fake their way through the front door.”

The rise of AI agents — legitimate and malicious — is driving the surge in automated traffic. Legacy defenses designed for human-scale traffic cannot distinguish a helpful AI scraper from a credential-stuffing bot when both operate at machine speed. Precursor’s session-wide evaluation means a bot cannot reset its signature by refreshing a page.
